Earth Week, April 22 to April 26, was kicked with a tabling event hosted by ASUCI on the Student Center Ring. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., multiple tables were set up to promote sustainability and encourage an awareness of each student’s environmental impact.
Associated Students of UCI held debates on April 10 and 11 in the Student Center to allow the candidates to voice their opinions and make their cases for why the student population should vote for them.
In collaboration with the FRESH Basic Needs Hub, nonprofit Showcase For a Cause held their first annual food drive concert on April 12 in Winifred Hall.
University of California workers went on strike for 24 hours on April 10 to protest continually stalled contract negotiations. The strike formally started at 12:00 a.m. on Wednesday and ended at 12:00 a.m. on Thursday.
Tony Barrett, a UCI alumnus from the class of ‘85, posted a photo of a letter on his Twitter, Monday April 1, stating that he intends to donate his body to the UCI School of Medicine after being diagnosed with a fatal disease.
A student-led climate strike took place by the UCI flagpoles and Student Center on March 15 as part of a larger global movement meant to draw awareness to climate change. Student leaders including Gianna Lum, president of UCI’s Climatepedia club, participated in the strike, which featured a variety of speakers and introduced a petition that is now available for signing and presents a series of demands to UCI.
The annual Grad Slam took place on Friday, March 8th, at The Cove - Applied Innovation. Graduate students from all disciplines awaited their turn in the spotlight and were hopeful to earn a coveted spot in the top three.
UCI’s Christian club Cru, hosted a science event, “A Panel on STEM and Faith,” on Feb. 28. Four prominent Christian science, technology, engineering and mathematics professors at UCI discussed their faith and how it coincides with their careers. The panel included Dr. Gregory Brewer, an adjunct professor in the Biomedical Engineering department; Dr. Elliot Hui, an assistant BME professor; Dr. David Reinkensmeyer, a professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology and BME; and Dr. Jack Brouwer, a professor in the MAE department.
A stabbing occurred near UC Irvine’s campus on March 10 in the student apartment complex Camino Del Sol. According to reports from CBS Los Angeles, the stabbing happened right before 10 p.m.
The Cross Cultural Center (CCC) held a “Culture Night Showcase” March 4 with performances by four different cultural clubs at UCI to give the student body a preview of what to expect from each group during their culture night performances, scheduled to take place in the 2019 spring quarter.
