The UCI Transportation and Distribution Services has recently made some changes regarding parking passes for students. Their official website now states that individuals who “live within two miles of campus, undergraduate residents of Campus Village, and freshmen residents of Mesa Court and Middle Earth” will no longer be able to obtain an on-campus parking pass.
On June 6, 2019, ASUCI unanimously passed legislation B54-39, which allocates $400,000 of the student government reserve funds to the FRESH Basic Needs Hub. These funds will help expand the FRESH Basic Needs Hub as well as hire a case manager that will support individuals with food planning and security. It will also help provide more resources and sustainable food options for students struggling with the basic need for food.
UC Irvine honored United States veterans during the UCI Memorial Flag Ceremony this past Thursday, May 23; salutes were made to those both in active duty as well as in the reserve and guard forces. The ceremony, which ran from noon to 1:00 p.m., included military speakers from older veterans to military students who continue to serve this country.
A climate change escape room was held by the ASUCI Sustainability Project Commission in the Cross-Cultural Center during UCI’s annual Earth Week last month. The project’s commissioner, Victoria Nguyen, said the point of the escape room was to provide students with an active way to increase their knowledge of climate change but also to inspire them.
On Thursday, May 9th, the Associated Students of UCI and the Disabilities Services Center collaborated to put together a panel on Intersectionality Diversity. The panel consisted of the Program Coordinator of the Womxn’s Hub Adrian Williams, the Associate Vice Chancellor of the Wellness, Health and Counseling Services Dr. Marcelle Hayashida, and a commission for the internal vice president of ASUCI Jenna Gotte.
The Center for Student Wellness and Health Promotion in coordination with the Peer Body Project, a national study originating at the Oregon Research Institute, conducted a workshop series centered around promoting body positivity for women on May 8.
The UCI Libraries and The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) entered a partnership which provides sponsored WSJ memberships for all students, faculty and staff at UCI as of late March. The partnership makes UC Irvine the first UC to have unlimited access to content from the Wall Street Journal. Anyone with a UCInetID now has access to wsj.com, the WSJ mobile app, as well as the WSJ plus platform — a membership loyalty program featuring special features.
The UCI Office of Inclusive Excellence (OIE) hosted “Moving Beyond Me Too” with Tarana Burke, leader of the Me Too movement, to a sold out audience at the Barclay Theatre on April 22. Burke’s presence was part of the “Perspectives on: Bias, Prejudice, and Bigotry” series, a component of OIE’s “Confronting Extremism” initiative.
The UCI International Center, UCI Student Wellness & Health Promotions, UCI Campus Assault Resources and Education (CARE) and the UCI International Student Excellence Program teamed up to host a program directed at international students to increase awareness and knowledge about sexual assault last Thursday.
Between attempting to break the internet with the most amount of posts with the hashtag #zotzotzot and attending student and faculty discussion panels, prospective students and their families were invited to take a glimpse of what UCI had to offer.
